Fear of government control and dictatorship greeted local U.S. Representative Mike Rogers when he held a town hall style meeting yesterday at Monarch Estates, a retirement living community here in Auburn, Alabama.  The Opelika-Auburn News, the local paper here, sent reporter Brittany Whitley.  Click here for her full story, including some reader comments.

In an opinion that appears to go far beyond legalizing possession of marijuana, the supreme court in Argentina has ruled in a case concerning five young men arrested with marijuana on them. The Argentine supreme court said, to quote the BBC:

• "Each adult is free to make lifestyle decisions without the intervention of the state"
• private behavior was legal, "as long as it doesn't constitute clear danger"
• "The state cannot establish morality"

This makes it official:  Argentina is more progressive than America.

Time to amend the US Constitution. The US Supreme Court has ruled 5-4 that the Constitution guarantees the right to own guns. Here is the Washington Post summary:

Writing for the majority, Justice Antonin Scalia said that an individual right to bear arms is supported by "the historical narrative" both before and after the Second Amendment was adopted.

Dear Congressman Rogers, I have just read your email dated today, 20080604, with Subject: "E-Newsletter: U.S. Needs New Energy Policy" .

There are a few points in which we are agreement: the US has no energy policy, we should halt oil subsidies, and we need to invest in alternate energy sources.

Let's recap.

In 2003 Scott McClellan, then the White House Press Secretary, tells us he has spoken to Libby and Rove and assures us they were not involved in the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame.

Libby was found guilty of four counts of perjury, obstruction of justice, and making false statements in March 2007.  Neither he nor anyone else has been charged with the actual leak, but that's probably because everyone is still lying about it.
